Hello All Users

You may know that I, and others, have been working on a new user forum
for OO.org users. Well, I wanted to invite the folks here to have a
look at our first working prototype - as we lay out forums and sub
forums and work out the modifications to the base line package.

How different would it be from the OOoForum.org project whihc already has a Base topic and is very well visited.

I would really be interested in any comments and ideas about how this
might be structured. A sandbox server has been setup at

http://oooug.paintedfrogceramics.com/forum

for this purpose. Please feel free to come take a look, register if
you like, and make any suggestions you have there. Good or bad they
will all help.

Also - there has been no 'formal' announcements on this yet - so ....
You guys get to hear it here first.

The site is being developed by and will be managed by a group of OO.o
users that are forming an independent users group, OpenOffice.org User
Community Volunteers ( OUCV ). The Charter for the new group is making
the rounds amongst the founders for signatures and when that is done
we will open for general membership.

SUN Microsystems has donated a dedicated server for our use in their
Hamburg Germany facility. Myself and Terry Ellison ( Chief Technology
Officer - EDS UK ) will be the initial administrators for the new
server and site.

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at not only the OOoForum
site for what is good and not so good, but also have been lurking
around the two German language forums, the French language forum and
to a lesser extent the other OO.o targeted portals and forums that we
could find. The design of the French language forum in particular will
play heavily in how we layout the, not yet built, landing page. With a
format geared to making easy access to Tutorials, Templates, Resources
( extensions etc ) and the forums.

The decisions made on platforms ( Solaris, PostgreSQL, phpBB 3.0 ) was
done with an eye towards fully supporting the smaller NL groups that
may be looking for user forums in their own languages. We hope to be
able to begin doing that in the near future.

A second goal is to offer support to other groups, projects within the
OO.org community. For example we will be setting up a public / private
forum for the OOoAuthors group. A second use by one of the OO.org
projects should be forthcoming shortly. ( I can't say which that
is...but do you like to work with jig-saw puzzles?..I do.)

I'll have more for you on some other interesting goings on - like
shared authentications of user account within the OO.o services
domain, later.

So - please stop by take a look - remember this is just a prototype
for the UI, yes I know..*smile*...the header graphic is too big for
one thing.

Thanks for you time.

Drew
