Oops! I've been up all night-- guess it is wearing on me. I should have
noticed that one.

Thank you for the detailed directions though :). In my over-sleepy
state, I guess I need it.

Thank you for asking-- yes, all is fine with me. :)

About the DB experience, it has been an interesting road. I have tried
for a long time with OO Base, using it daily for my 3-4 DB needs. And
not the least of which because I am deeply appreciative of all the help
you have given us Drew, toiling long hours to get that .csv file
imported correctly. The spirit with which you have come forward to help
me and countless others also-- yours is one of the finest examples of
the real service-mindedness of the open source community. And for this
reason perhaps beyond any other, open source is destined for success in
every nook and corner of the computer world.

With regard to Base itself though-- perhaps it was just my own
shortcomings but I came to feel that Base is still quite wrought with
idiosyncracies, pathways that don't work (or a workaround is needed b/c
it does not go as it is supposed to go), and just difficult normal
functions like the jerky scrolling with the scrollbar, as well as
several other such issues-- and so it was feeling user un-friendly. I
began checking out other DB programs. I came up with Kexi, and began
experimenting with it. So far I am finding it much better and smoother.
For example, the scrollbar works properly. May seem like a small thing,
but when one is dealing with a large table, it makes a huge difference.
Then, when in either tables or forms, switching between the design and
data views is seamless and instant. Also, the .csv import tool is quite
smooth-- one easy step, and no problems with , or " delimiters. It also
has a presetup import tool for MSA DBs, which works perfectly and is
very nice to have. Also, Kexi is much, much faster than Base.

It may be that OO Base is set up to do much more complex DB tasks than
Kexi-- about this I cannot say, for I am not involved in such sorts of
tasks. But for the common user, the common tasks at least in my view are
much more easily accomplished with Kexi than with Base.

Over at KOffice, they publicize Kexi as MSA for Linux. Some may feel
there is no need to mimick MSA, but I'll say one thing-- for the normal
lay user, it makes a huge difference if everything works the way it is
supposed to. And for that reason alone, MS Access is a wonderful DB
program. It does everything the lay user needs, and does so smoothly.
Kexi is not quite as polished as MSA is, but it is almost there. Easy to
use, and does what it says it is going to do.

So Drew, hopefully only for now I say so long. I shall give it a go with
Kexi. But one thing also I'll say: it is apparent from following along
the dba-users and -dev lists, that there are many very bright minds and
good people working on this OO Base. I am very impressed with you and
Frank, and so many others on this list. And although I don't know much
about DB programs or programming, but with such shining minds working
with dedication, it is sure that the day is not far when Base will
become a thing of beauty and a joy to use. And I look forward to using
it again in future.

Wishing you all the best,
Swarup
