I've always had problems with MySQL ODBC drivers that come with Ubuntu.
Also 5.x drivers don't cooperate well with OOo. Try to install 3.x
drivers by hand (in fact only 1 file needed, 2 if you want to have
ODBCConfig GUI). ODBC it is a lot faster than JDBC.
PS. And I can't wait for SDBC that is a lot faster than ODBC...
