Howdy,
Recently Frank posted up a pool of 'Next Features' possible for Base,
among which was this entry:
export the complete database/application
* as web application
* as JavaFX application
as long as Sun does not provide a Linux version, most Java Linux programmers
boycot the use of the JavaFX.
[there are workarounds to make it work with NB on Linux, but that's not the
point]
JavaFx 1.0 ... Just coming out of the gate in other words. Is it really
so hard to understand that if one had to decide what platforms to target
first it's MS, Mac, Linux, other - in that order...come on of course not.
Even if you discount user (developer) base as a criteria you still have
the issue of 'fixed' vs 'moving' targets. MS and Mac OSs are single
vendor by definition. Linux...all desktop managers? all browsers? Not to
mention they are going after Mobile devices also...
Small aside if I may:
Back in the day (way way back) I took a course in "Object Oriented
Design for C++" - a dual professor course. One professor with the
letters PHD after his name had been an academic all his working life,
the other professor was a senior development manager with a brash, young
silicon valley company (LOL..name starts with an S, ends with an N and
is 3 letters long...and as I recall I was brash and young also). One of
the lectures was about requirements gathering in the problem domain. Dr
Heinz went on and on about "Analyze, Analyze and Analyze some
more...don't even think about a design until you know you have fully
analyzed the problem domain!"...ok, so up comes Mark - his addition to
the discussion: ~"Right - it's Thursday night folks - you have a meeting
on Monday morning with your team and your bosses about the new
system...let's talk about how to make decisions regarding designs with
the information you have that can accommodate change."
My point:
- in the perfect world JavaFx releases 1.0 for MS Windows(NT, Me, XP,
Vista...IE5,6,7,8), Mac OSX 10.4/5..Safari), Linux (How many distros can
you name..Gnome, KDE 3,4, others..Tbird, Konqoror..etc), Mobile (I don't
even know all the categories here on any given day..) Oh and Solaris ( I
suppose SUN kind of wants to support that - even if it isn't supported
in the current 1.0 ) simultaneously.
But we don't live in a perfect world and sometimes you just have to do
it in steps 'cause the marketplace is real and it waits on no one, even
if you know that some folks are not going to be happy with the call.
IMHO, as OOo is a multiplataform office suite, it should avoid the JavaFX until
it is available for Linux, as it is now for Win and Mac.
Agreed - Assuming it is even a fertile idea worth pursuing, then I
suppose this would not be something the development team would want to
schedule for the 3.2 release cycle.
Good to hear from you, as always.
Drew
