I will be taking my first step into linux using openSUSE 11.1 as a guest
on vista on my laptop (80GB hard drive, 2GB memory, intel T5600
processor). I will have MySQL on the vista host and OpenOffice on the
openSUSE 11.1 guest.
Little nervous and trying to get some questions answered before starting
so I know what I'm getting myself into so hope you guys can humour me! I
will use Virtualbox to manage the virtualisation (I know there are
various virtualisation and linux distro options but again please humour
me in my choice - for my simple single user needs on a personal laptop
I'm guessing there is little between the various options particularly at
my newbie stage).
What I need is two way communication so Base can receive and send
to/from MySQL (megabytes not gigabytes of data).
My question:
is anyone using such a set-up and if so are you able to share some
specific guidance for a simple newbie e.g. following something like
Roland Bouman's JDBC guide (
http://rpbouman.blogspot.com/2006/12/mysql-meets-openofficeorg.html ) as
to how to set up the connection between Base (guest) and MySQL host. I
use both ODBC and JDBC at the moment so question could be rephrased as
what are the steps to let a virtual Base guest see / use an existing
ODBC connection on the host.
My understanding (I am jut starting reading manuals etc so may be
horribly wrong) is there are 2 ways via NAT (Network Address Translation
- port forwarding) or Host interface network. From Google / manuals I
think a Host interface network is what I want (yes this maybe should go
on the virtualbox forum - but I'm after details of specific settings for
working with Base).
Also if anyone has experience with the two and can share thoughts about
relative benefits it would also be a big help.
Many thanks,
Darren
