Hi Darren
I am not famililar with Virtualbox but I have a similar situation using
vmware
I am using the database (postgresql) on the guest and OOo.Base on trhe
hostm
but that should not make much difference, since you have to have a host
only
network where the host and the guest are on the same network, that is
not visible from the outside network (sorry I am bit week in
networking!)
all you need to do within OOo.Base ist to set up the jdbc connection
with the
IP address and port number of the host, since mysql is going to listen
to
this port no matter how the request gets there.
So no ODBC on the host but only on the guest, where OOo.Base is
located.
Hope this is a next step for you

re phrased for those who don't have hours to read emails!
what are the steps to let a virtual Base guest (openSUSE 11.1) see /
use
an existing ODBC connection on the host (vista) with Virtualbox?
Many thanks,

Subject: connection settings between Base (on openSUSE 11.1
guest) and
MySQL 5.1 (vista host)?

I will be taking my first step into linux using openSUSE 11.1 as a
guest
on vista on my laptop (80GB hard drive, 2GB memory, intel T5600
processor). I will have MySQL on the vista host and OpenOffice on the
openSUSE 11.1 guest.
Little nervous and trying to get some questions answered before
starting
so I know what I'm getting myself into so hope you guys can humour
me! I
will use Virtualbox to manage the virtualisation (I know there are
various virtualisation and linux distro options but again please
humour
me in my choice - for my simple single user needs on a personal
laptop
I'm guessing there is little between the various options particularly
at
my newbie stage).
What I need is two way communication so Base can receive and send
to/from MySQL (megabytes not gigabytes of data).
My question:
is anyone using such a set-up and if so are you able to share some
specific guidance for a simple newbie e.g. following something like
Roland Bouman's JDBC guide (
http://rpbouman.blogspot.com/2006/12/mysql-meets-openofficeorg.html )
as
to how to set up the connection between Base (guest) and MySQL host.
I
use both ODBC and JDBC at the moment so question could be rephrased
as
what are the steps to let a virtual Base guest see / use an existing
ODBC connection on the host.
My understanding (I am jut starting reading manuals etc so may be
horribly wrong) is there are 2 ways via NAT (Network Address
Translation
- port forwarding) or Host interface network. From Google / manuals I
think a Host interface network is what I want (yes this maybe should
go
on the virtualbox forum - but I'm after details of specific settings
for
working with Base).
Also if anyone has experience with the two and can share thoughts
about
relative benefits it would also be a big help.
Many thanks,
Darren
