Howdy,
From time to time I ask myself just why I volunteer as much time to the
OpenOffice.org project as I do...(I try not to answer MYSELF in these
situations for fear it might be a sign of some mental abnormality)
Then again from time to time there is benefit in not being an
employee...one gets to act pretty much as one likes...
When I read the news that Oracle was buying Sun my first thought
was...'bummer dude'...you see I was a programmer/hacker/wide eyed kid
thinking he was going to 'change the world' once, back in a time and
place called Silicon Valley.
Sun...was one of the 'valley' firms that well you either hated or loved
and most of my crowed pretty much fell into the later category...They
did give the guys in stuffed suits a good run for their money..and then
some...and maybe they aint over yet it seems...:>)
But things changed and I ended up on the East coast of the continent,
writing business software for...well...stuffed suits and succumbing to
the dark side...yes project management...and now Sun ...ok let's not
finish that analogy..
For the last decade of my corporate life the target database was more
often then not...you guessed it Oracle. I like Oracle...they helped pay
the bills :>)
Ok - so it had been a while since last I trolled the virtual hall ways
of the Oracle sites...and they have felt like narrow hall ways, the
Oracle web sites..like a MUDD game gone bad...at times in their history..
But to my surprise they are going the way of social networking for the
site now..and I said to myself - Self, why not jump the gun and open an
OpenOffice.org Base User Group on the Oracle social networking site - so
I did...
