Hi,
A couple of questions have come up about using these web based email
clients with OO.o (sending email attachemets and using the contacts for
an address book)
Was wondering if anyone else has been mucking around with these.
What I was thinking was the we could use a FAQ or How To on the wiki
about the subject.
Here is what I have so far:
GMAIL
- exporting with Google format is a problem as it embeds CR characters
in the data and the import into Base has a problem with that
- exporting in OutLook format.works quite well and the data is easily
imported into a Base file, or opened with Calc.
- There is no option for selecting which fields in the Contacts data to
export, only a choice between the 3 canned formats (google, outlook, vCar)
- Importing back to gmail seems to work just as well. (only tried with
the Outlook format)
- because you can round-trip the data I would recommend using TEXT table
feature in HSQLdb for this.
- GMAIL is not able to install as the default mail client under Windows,
so OO.o can not send a document as an attachment directly.
Live Mail
- only supports export it seems
- user can select which data fields to export
- import to a base file goes quite smoothly
- even though this is a web client it becomes the default mail client
under Win 7 at least
- Using File>Send as email attachment does work.
- When I tried this the first time, about 10 days agao, (file send)
would raise a Captcha window before completing the operation
- After applying the latest update files from MS for Win7 OO.o seems to
be recognized and the captcha is no longer being triggered.
So, what do folks think - Worth a FAQ or a How to?
What about GMAIL - since the fields in the export file are fixed it
would be really simple to put an actual ODB file with a TEXT table
pre-defined for the data, perhaps on the extension site. Worth doing?
Thanks,
Drew
