Using version 1.5.3 of Apache Directory Studio to export an LDIF. I have some attributes
that are Directory String types, but they have some "markup" in them. The LDIF
export is BASE-64 encoding these strings, and I'm unable to find a way to force it to
just output the string as-is.

For example:
A displayName value of '<b>Engineering Support</b> (Also Select "Home Page")'

Becomes (in the LDIF):
'displayName::
PGI+RW5naW5lZXJpbmcgU3VwcG9ydDwvYj4gKEFsc28gU2VsZWN0ICJIb21lIFBhZ2UiKQ=='

Other displayName values (without any markup) export fine (as simple text).

Advice?
A value starting with '<' will be base 64 encoded. That's what specify RFC 2849 :

value-spec               = ":" (    FILL 0*1(SAFE-STRING) /
                                ":" FILL (BASE64-STRING) /
                                "<" FILL url)
                           ; See notes 7 and 8, below

SAFE-STRING              = [SAFE-INIT-CHAR *SAFE-CHAR]

SAFE-INIT-CHAR           = %x01-09 / %x0B-0C / %x0E-1F /
                           %x21-39 / %x3B / %x3D-7F
                           ; any value<= 127 except NUL, LF, CR,
                           ; SPACE, colon (":", ASCII 58 decimal)
                           ; and less-than ("<" , ASCII 60 decimal)<<<---

The reason is that a value like :

displayName:<  (some URI)

will get its value from a URI.

There is no way to force your data to be in clear text.
