Thanks Emmanuel.   Could you please be specific?   There is no such command 
under the bin directory.   I saw there was a gracefulshutdown class defined in 
the API doc.  Does it mean I have to implement my own ds client?   Is this part 
of the LDAP protocol?

You can send the server an GraceFulShutdown extended request, it will stop the 
server.
