I can report some success. I took advice from this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=140315
in xorg.conf I disabled eDP1 and allowed only HDMI2 with mode "1680x1050". This gives me the desired resolution and a working and stable display. I did not turn off acceleration. There's occasional minor blurring of text in e.g. Firefox which goes away when you scroll down etc. But all in all it's stable so far. The problem is obviously changing between different modes and back to text---that does not work. But since I won't need it anyway I'm happy so far.
