I also think relying on local libraries may be a good thing.  Newbies
may not know how to locate the correct libraries and include files for
the Linux systems.  I have been in a position of finding some
distributions put  libraries in unusual locations.  In fact the
following may be a problem for some:

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libhdf5.a  (Linux Mint 17.3)

It may be expected in /usr/lib tree, base tree.

Feedback of locations in other systems ( distributions) may be help in
this matter.
