Ok, this solved the error "Invalid package name: '*' " but "The default package '.' is not permitted..." is still there. But I now get a different error message from eclipse:
An internal error occurred during: "Updating Maven Project". Unsupported IClasspathEntry kind=4 This concerns to M2E.
