There seems to be a ongoing effort to make Java available directly at
the hardware level, see <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_processor>.

IMO, software still is far more easier to update than hardware, making
it, for example, for more easy to update a stock JRE running on a
Rasberry PI (or any other ARM-based board) than it would be to update
a custom synthesized JVM on a FPGA.

Though FPGAs can hugely improve certain tasks, I do wonder whether the
effort of creating a ASIC for this purpose outweighs the number of
times packages are resolved at runtime.
