Sorry, I had tried both ways, with "-m" and with the editor. On the output I showed, it was with the editor, and not the "-m" switch, and I entered nothing in that case (just exited the editor) and did not have output redirected.
The "-m" commit switch is working properly. Sorry for the confusion.
