It probably invoked the program your system is configured to use as a text editor, which very well might be vi. IIRC most programs use the EDITOR or VISUAL environment variables to determine the editor to use. You are supposed to enter a commit message and ":x" vi, then the commit will begin. Alternatively you can specify a commit message using the "-m" command line switch, just as it's done in svn.
