The latter -- snapshots are just about a consistent view of the 
underlying device at a point in time.  Whether what's on the device 
represents something that applications can swallow is a different 
story.  Fortunately, PostgreSQL does a good job of that end.

Seems to me that it isn't applied to ignore patterns, so I can't do what 
I wanted to do.
