No, thank you, that still happens with trunk. I'll put a better error message
there.
BTW, trunk has a (fixed) version of "make install" - that would create the
needed directories as well.

Versioning your /etc, /home or even your whole installation?
Try fsvs (fsvs.tigris.org)!
