Thanks again Bart. I was wondering how you got that error. Removing scale did the trick.
Your first email may have provided a clue, why would geoserver fail to catch this error? So I looked at my data types in PostGIS. Depth to water field is of type "numeric" in PostGIS. Groundwater elevation is "double precision".
