Sun bought the German company "Star Division" that was located in Hamburg and developed the StarOffice Suite. I think, this is the reason, why so many OpenOffice.org developers are still located in Hamburg. :) For more details I would recommend, that you google for StarOffice, Star Division or maybe the former owner of the company, Marco Börries.
