I think Cliff hit the nail on the head about selecting a default language. This seems different than OpenOffice, where the default language seemed to be active upon installation, based on (I'm guessing) the operating system default language. Or at least I don't ever remember having to "select" a default language in the spell checker. NoOp, although I understand the point of your question, I'm not sure it would have made any difference had it turned out to be a bug issue rather than a settings issue. There were so many words that were missed that the words it missed that the problem would have been a major "it doesn't work at all" bug, in which case the words that were missed would be irrelevant.
