I asked Werner Donne to see if odf2epub would work. The test resulted in the tex being handled properly, but the LO math appeared but only as a text expression. Werner indicated that the isue was that epub readers did not yet handle MathMl islands.
This is part of a continuing issue with OOo which incorporates MathML but not in a way transparent to other applications. For example, you really need additonal export macros to be able to convert an OOo doc to Xhtml+MathML, as saving an OOo doc to html frmat converts equations to images. So, as a result of the above, if you save the doc with your equations as LO Writer html, and then import into calibre, and then convert to epub, all equations will ppear as you intended, because LO converts all those equatins to images when saving to html.
