Ahh... Sorry, this mailing list posted on a web interface like a Usenet discussion group is confusing me. Okay. I tried saving the xls file as ods and found the resulting file now didn't reveal ANY formulas at all. Re-saving the ods file as xls still didn't restore any of the formulas in the show-formulas option.
Ah, it occurred to me to also include the original xls file -- but now I find even THAT one does not show any formulas when I use the toggle or select the option from the Tools menu! I'm trying to think if I made any changes in user prefs during this time, but I don't think so. I changed Formula Syntax from Calc A1 to Excel A1, but that was some time ago, and I don't think I edited the test files after making the syntax style change. Anyway. the ORIGINAL xls file now behaves exactly the same as the xls-to-ods-(then back to)-xls file. This is actually a worksheet taken from a practice file accompanying Richard Kraneis's book The World's Shortest Excel Book. Given the generic content of the worksheet, I don't think Mr. Kraneis would mind, especially considering this amounts to an endorsement for his book.
