I actually decided to restart the computer right before I got your response, and that seems to have fixed the problem - MS Office works just fine now. The restart probably "auto-cleared" a cache somewhere. Crisis averted!
Now that I know that the problem is "fixable," I may try re-installing LibreOffice to see if it will coexist peacefully with Word after a post-install restart. I will update to let y'all know if it works. For the sake of "full-disclosure," this occurred with Windows 7 (64-bit) and Microsoft Office 2007.
