Thanks Tom,

I agree with you about the MS Office xlsX/docX formats -
normal users often get confused when file formats proliferate.

In my bug investigation, I was just checking whether
saving to XLSX showed the same behaviour as saving to XLS,
which it does.

I am very nearly at the point of recommending that our
office switch to LibreOffice. The original sticking point
was million-row spreadsheets, which are now implemented
in LibreOffice (hooray!), as we do a lot of list-fangling
which is easier without row-limits in spreadsheets.
This splitter bug is just the last tiny, but very obvious, glitch,
which I just know someone here will notice straight away. This is going
to be important to us during the intermediate period while
we are using MS Office and LibreOffice in parallel, and using
XLS as the interchange format.

I am very encouraged by the obviously active development community
here, hopefully at some point I will be able to add something constructive!

cheers,

Chris

Hi :)
Bug-reports often lay around for ages before anyone has time to look at it. If you get lucky then a triager might have a quick look to file it properly, check for duplicates and/or ask for extra info lol

However, in your case it seems that even a non-dev could help a bit so it makes sense to "bump it" on the list as you did. I think a lot of the newer users could do a lot of triaging and giving them an easy way in is fantastic.

I think the xlsX and docX formats are worth avoiding. I try to get MS 2007 and 2010 users to save in the older formats so that everyone can read the format but the request perplexes them.

Tom :)

*Subject:* [libreoffice-users] Bug - save spreadsheet in Excel format - window split

Hello newsgroup,

I have reported a bug to bugs.freedesktop.org (bug ID 39589),
but have not yet received any feedback.
I would very much appreciate if someone here could verify
the behaviour I am seeing.

LibreOffice V3.4.1 and V3.4.2 on Windows XP and Vista.
The symptoms are - any spreadsheet saved from Calc as XLS
or XLSX format has a split window when opened in Excel.
This even happens with blank spreadsheets.
To reproduce, open Calc, save empty spreadsheet as XLS format.
Then open the saved XLS file in Excel - the row labels are
hidden by a window split bar which was not in the empty
spreadsheet saved by Calc.

See my bug report https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39589
for a screenshot and empty XLS file saved by LO Calc V3.4.1

This bug has been introduced since V3.3.4 - XLS files saved by
LO Calc V3.3.4 do not exhibit this behaviour.

I only have MS Excel 2000 to test with. Can anyone else
verify this bug?

Thanks very much,

Chris
