Quick answer to question 1) only: View, Slide Pane.
I did as you told, but the slide pane did not dock, it shows but as a very big window -> http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6222/6350104506_9da0c1500b_o_d.png
I know there must be a way to reset all settings to default but I find it too dramatic:)
