How about changing the goal-posts a bit?  

Save the document as an Odt and try to get the layout about the same as the 
docX that you can read.  Hopefully that should force everything to switch to 
the standard default character encoding rather than sticking with whatever the 
document is currently using.  

MS Office 2010 & 2007 can read/write Odts but only using the older ODF formats. 
 LibreOffice can be set to use the older format by 

Tools - Options - "+Load/Save" - General

Then about halfway change "ODF format version" from "1.2 Extended" to "1.0 / 
1.1".  Then saving as Odt gives a result that should be easy for MS Office to 
open.
