You'll find more screenshots at the link I posted in the previous
message. I think they will show up in Dropbox in the order that I talk
about them here.
Left click somewhere on the desktop. In the upper left corner you
should see the Finder Menu displayed. (Screenshot)
Click on Finder, then click on Preferences. (Screenshot)
That will open the Finder Preference window. (Screenshot)
Select General, the light switch icon, and place a check mark next to
the items you want displayed on the desktop.
FYI, System Preferences is analogous to Windows Control Panel, and small
preferences like the Finder Preferences is similar to Properties in
Windows. This is not a straight across comparison, but close enough, I
think, to help you navigate around the Lion system.
