The graphics hardware is the same for both distros, since you're using the same computer, right ? Then it's very likely that the graphics drivers are the same too, or at least that the linux-related (supposed) support problem for that graphics chipset is the same. The fact that you experience the bug with desktop effects disabled makes me think that it's LO that is triggering some "advanced" graphical operation that in turn triggers a bug.
