I am dealing with a DELL laptop that I went from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04
final beta.
I installed MATE for its GNOME 2.x desktop environment.
Ubuntu 12.04 final beta installs 3.5.2 as a default.
I wanted LO 3.4.6 instead.
BUT,
I had errors trying to get the menus system to show 3.4.6
I could not get the launchers to show in "Applications/Office"
I finally got it to work but it required a bit of weirdness.
I un-installed 3.5.2 with Ubuntu Software Center
[the big mistake]
Install 3.4.6 with the terminal
install menu [desktop-integration] - got errors
try 1 via terminal
stated something about could not since the menus
already exists
try 2 via GDebi Package installer
had error in the "LO core" dependency
SOLUTION - I hoped but it worked
First
I had to reinstall 3.5.2 via the Synaptic Package Manager
Second
Then removed it in that same manager just after it was reinstalled
Then ran the 3.4.6 desktop-integration via GDebi Package installer
[since 3.4.6 still was in the Synaptic Package list]
It worked then, showing the launcher listing for LO in the
"Applications/Office".
SO
Please do not remove the default LO version via the Ubuntu Software
Center when you have 12.04 and MATE. It may be OK when 12.04LTS comes
out on April 26th, but I will not hold my breath. It could be MATE, or
a combination. I do not know, but it messed me up.
So currently, it WILL cause problems.
