It never worked this way. Data always come from a database document (.odb) which itself may be connected to a spreadsheet (worst choice) or various other tabular data sources (plain text, dBase, address books, true databases). Unforturnately, this matter of fact is striktly hidden from the user who started the idiotic mail merge wizard. Search .odb documents in your home directory, open them, notice the connection info in the status bar. Then register the .odb document at Tools>Options>Base>Databases. Your letter template should be connected to the right list again.
