This thread is symptomatic for the whole mailing list. Nobody has the most fundamental knowledge to solve a simple problem but dozends of people have to say something completely off topic. You are on the right track. You may remove the write flag from a file so you can not modify the file anymore. A directory is a file which contains a list of regular files. When you remove write flag from a directory, you can not modify the list of files.
