My point though is that there is generally a sweet spot, determined by OS/version and what kind of usage.
Someone on Windows 7 who only does email and web browsing will not benefit much from more than 4GB of RAM, while someone who does a lot of number crunching and graphics work and opening large files will benefit a lot.
My personal 'bare minimum and better' recommendations are aimed at casual users...
