I wonder if there is a problem with the font used or some other issue
with both the text and font "type" being placed into a Calc cell.
I assume you tried "Paste Special" and used "unformatted text" or
something like that.
The problem could be the mix between the two languages, since there
are glyph/character differences between fonts.
I wonder if a different Japanese font would work better. There was a
thread about different free Japanese fonts out there that were good
with LO. I do not know if I would "trust" MS's version of that
language font. I can look into my font folder and see what fonts were
downloaded from the referred sites. Switching to one of them might
fix the problem, or might not.

I would suggest you try 3.5 or 3.6 before reporting a bug.
Tried some more things:
I DID upgrade to 3.6. After presenting me a whole bunch of new errors
this is now running.
Copy from Writer -> Calc ... so far either totally impossible, or after
removing any and all conceivable "formatting settings",
working with text only, same font and size set in Writer/Calc -> worked
sometimes with "paste unformatted text"
After upgrading to 3.6 -> The copy action now "works", but although the
plain text in both Writer + Calc is set to
MS P Gothic (the font actually does not matter, I tried a number of
different fonts) 10.5 points (Japanese text in BOTH Writer + Calc)
-> copying a piece of plain text is now possible, but now the font
insists on being 6.8 points = unintelligibly small!
Actually, just now I was forced to work with notebook PC running Windows
7 (which I use rarely) and still has 3.4.5 in it
copy + paste causes no problems.
Neither does copy + paste cause any problems using Openoffice.
Is this now a problem with the OS (Windows XP)?
If it is, what is the big difference between OpenOffice and LibreOffice
here?
Any ideas as to look where and for what?
