Hi :) MariaDB is a database that can be used as an external back-end for Base.
It is a drop-in replacement for MySql so it is really aimed at reasonably large to massive databases = not just little address books of a half-dozen people! Many people probably prefer to stick with MySql because it's produced by Oracle who produce the Java we all know and love. If you want to try out MariaDB for the first time then this latest Alpha-testing release is probably not the ideal one for you. Probably best to try their latest stable release instead.
