Let's see if I understand what you have written: You have a few
hundred computers networked together. One of them contains a Sun LDAP
database. You want to access this database from all of the computers so
that each one has the latest information from the database. The
individual computer is to access the database when the computer starts
up or you refresh Base (database component of LO).
One way to do this is to use Base to connect to the LDAP database.
File -> Database will open the Database Wizard. At the bottom of this
wizard, you have a dropdown list labeled "Connect to an existing
database" with the default value JDBC. Click the option button in front
of it. Then select "LDAP addressbook" from that list. Click Next. Fill
in the needed information. Click Next. This page asks for the user name
and a checkbox for "password required".
At this point, someone else will have to help out a little. I
have not worked with these databases enough to know if a user name has
to be entered in the Database Wizard. It appears that it does not. I
left the user name blank, clicked Finish, named the database document
file, and saved it in my chosen location. It opened with a window
requesting the user name and password. If this is the case, then the
database document file could be copied to each computer.
VERY IMPORTANT POINT: When you name this file, make sure that it
is registered. This has to be done for every computer. What this does is
to tell LO where this file is located and lists the tables of the LADP
database in the Data Source window. (Use the F4 key to open the Data
Source window.)
The quickest way to register a database is to open the Data Source
window. In the left side of the window, you find the registered
databases. Probably, you will only see Bibliography which comes with LO.
Right click below it and select "Register databases". Click the New
button. Browse to the database document file location. Click OK in the
Create Database Link. Click OK in the Registered Databases. You should
see the name of the database document file there.
Now you can uses the F4 key to see the table or tables in the LADP
database listed on the left. Clicking one of them, and you will see the
entries on the right side.
