"Setting up" and using a PostgreSQL server locally, especially since the SDBC driver now comes with LibreOffice, is trivial. And there's nothing that's available for free that will keep your data safer (from corruption) than PostgreSQL. You don't even have to "install" PostgreSQL to use it, but of course it will be more convenient to use then.
