LibreOffice should work fine without java.  Sorry i only just now found your 
1st email today.  


So, your OS is Fedora.  Does LibreOffice work well enough without the desktop 
integration packages?  I think that is the first thing to check.  Then you can 
try again with the freedesktop-menus if you haven't already got that working by 
now.  (Sorry i know you probably haven't been able to work at this today as 
it's Friday)
