Hi :) Errr, when you are at the top of a column and don't know how far down it goes you can always use Ctrl down-arrow to get to the bottom, or at least the first break. Being fairly paranoid i do Ctrl and down-arrow again just to make sure the list doesn't resume after a short break of a few empty cells. If it does i get to the top of the new start.
If you also press the shift key while doing that it selects all the cells between the start and where-ever you have ended-up so far. Just shift and down-arrow adds one more cell to your selection. Shift and up-arrow takes the last cell off. So, as long as you avoid taking your finger off the shift key you can rapidly select quite a messy column even if it has tons of breaks in it.
