I find it best to work in ODF formats then after the final save of the
ODF document use SAVE AS and save to the desired MS format. When I
receive a file I open and then save to the appropriate ODF format if I
plan to edit the document.

Again, for me it just opens up as a blank document, when it should open with
populated header and footer content, as it does in Word.

With Linux Mint I was able to directly unzip the dotx file using Ark and
inspect the various XML files. I found a couple name header and footer
but was stopped because I was not sure what the text layout should look
like. Hopefully someone else can explain where the formating information
is hidden. I could easily open the XML files once I had them, so cutting
and pasting is a possibility.
