I have had two replies, 1 off-list.
I have assumed to-date that Libre Office is entirely independent of the
pinter specified on the machine, contrary to my experience with MSO. Is
this the case?
It has been suggested that this is an inevitable consequence of reducing
the resolution from 300dpi something like 96(?). An A4 sheet at 300dpi
needs nearly 3600 pixels and the screen offers something like 900,
allowing for toolbars and all the other stuff that steals area from the
screen. So we have 1 screen pixel to represent a 4x4 area on the
document. How the 16 pixels are reduced to one is a matter of choice and
may require variation depending on the type of image we are dealing with.
I think it is the anti-aliasing algorithm. Investigations are
continuing. Thanks for replies to date. Any other thoughts?

What seems to be happening is that the lines are 'falling between'
screen pixels. I guess this is probably a feature requirement, or
have I missed something.
