I followed Mr. Herr's instructions of removing page numbers and tabs from ALL levels of the TOC. That finally did the trick. Now I have a TOC with entries, but no leading dots and page numbers, just like Amazon wants it.
Glad it worked ! I just wanted to double check smthg on my system: removing page numbers on some levels of the TOC, eg levels 1 and 3, leaving page numbers on level 2. That worked, too.
