I'm sure it has nothing to do with LO and the problem lies with the file permissions in his OS. My guess is that he uses some flavour of Linux and he opens the document from the email. I'm using Ubuntu and when I open a document from an email in Thunderbird, it save an read-only copy in /tmp and LO opens the document from there.
