I think Bill was asking how to keep a few rows in the middle of the
spreadsheet frozen with areas above and below that could be scrolled
through?  if so then i don't think it's possible even in Gnumeric let
alone Calc or Excel.

It is possible to freeze everywhere above and to the left of a chosen
point though and that's what people have given.

It is also possible to use
Window - Split
but again you only get 2 areas rather than 3.  This way allows both
the top and the bottom areas to be scrollable though.

i think the
Window - Freeze
is best for what you seem to want.  There is an extra wrinkle which is
that you can scroll all the way down, before applying the freeze, so
that the only rows visible on-screen are 35 and below.  Then do the
freeze by placing the cursor in row 41 (probably B41 so that the A
column will also be frozen) and then choose
Window - Freeze

Of course this last way you would never be able to see anything above
row 35 until you unfrozen the window but that is very trivial for
people to do.
