Perhaps try renaming the User Profile?

The fresh install uses the old profile and it's possible that
something is wonky in there that only just "came to light" after
gaining the huge boost in extra features.
Both problems are weird and "should not happen" and renaming the User
Profuile is often a quick way of solving all sorts of weirdnesses like
that.

I tried your advice. It seems that the problem has gone. The program is
a bit snappier now too, so I believe yout suggestions was right.
