Hi :) I wouldn't bother. Just use native ODF format. Older versions are compatible with newer ones and newer ones with older.
The only problem is if you use newer features. In which case the older version might not be able to show soem of the result but then when re-opened with the newer version it'll be there. I'm on 3.5.7 on this machine and at least 1 other and, of course, all LiveUsb sessions of Ubuntu 12.04. I've never yet had a problem sharing files with other machine on 4.1.x or higher. Admittedly i'm not using advanced functionality though. The 'newest' feature i use is plonking in logos in svg format! Note that if you take any office suite or program and wiped out around 80% of it's functionality then 80-90 of it's users would never notice.
