Hi :) I kinda gather that it is possible to develop new filters for the format, perhaps as an Extension. There just doesn't seem to have been much interest in it.
Also it is still easily possible to get older versions of software that can read it and convert. Such older software not being vulnerable to many threats that are out in the wild.
