My kludgy way = Can you
File - "Save As .." - ODF (specifically odp in this case)
select all text
Ctrl A
and then
Format - "Remove direct formatting"
to get rid of all the stray styles and formatting imposed by MS Office and
save again in the odp format.

Hopefully that should let the spell-check run properly but it will make the
slides look messy, assuming all the text on all the slides really did get
selected.
