Hi :) Gilles does not actually state that in the original question. Also i tend to find it's a VERY common misunderstanding. People tend to assume that files can only be opened and used in the same program that created them. They have no idea what "interoperability" means.
To be fair, many proprietary programs often seem to have been set-up in that way = to make it difficult to move to a different program. The export-import route via some non-standarised format is often the best you can hope for. Most OpenSource programs do a lot of work to accept a wide variety of formats very easily. So when people talk about exporting, without explicitly saying why, it makes me wonder if it's just to open the file in a different program.
