yes it was the view setting, I somehow didn't see it in the view menu
but clicking on the little icon did the trick. Thanks all!

I think these are the options under View > Zoom... > Zoom... > View Layout.
Perhaps you didn't look deep enough, since it's not entirely obvious
that these view layout options would be with the zoom options. I guess
they are kind of related, since the two-page layout tends to be most
useful when zoomed to fit the two pages on screen. As you've found, it's
not so helpful with larger scales since you then have to scroll
left/right as well as up/down to get around the document.
